February 18, 2010 Lesson 2 of Proverbs 2 and 3

What directions are given in these chapters for the attaining of wisdom? Make a list of them as a guide to your own life. Answer: Accept the words of wisdom. Turn your ear to wisdom and apply it to your heart. Call out for, and search for wisdom. Keep wisdom’s commands in your heart. Honor God, and as 3:5-6 says: 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

What benefits does wisdom bring us, and from what evils does it preserve us? How far have I proved this in my own experience? Answer: Wisdom act as a shield with God, gives long life, and brings riches (not necessarily worldly) honor and long life. Wisdom protects you from wicked men and the adulteress.

‘My son’: What application does the writer of the epistle to the Hebrews give to these words? Cf. Heb 12:5-10. Answer: I think obviously it really is not much more than an analogy to show we are his children and that we receive discipline in order to grow. V 11 of the Hebrews reference says it better (imagine that God Word!!) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
